District 19-5A Preview

By Christopher Lyke
Texas HS Football Chief Editor

This district is better known as the district with Katy and everyone else or the Katy Tiger Invitational. This district has been Katy's prized possession for more than a decade. The 2005 season will be no different. If the Tigers fall from the throne, the teams that may give the Tigers any legit challenge is Hastings, Cinco Ranch and Elsik. But saying that, don't expect it. The district's talent pool and experience level is average at best for 2005.

The two most improved teams are the twin schools of Hastings and Elsik. The Bears do not have an abundant amount of depth. The Elsik Rams are in a very similar situation. But the two schools have a good group of key skill position players coming back. And despite losing its backfoeld, Cinco Ranch might be in the best position to compete with the Katy Tigers.

Projected Finish

If Strake Jesuit intends to compete for a playoff spot, this could be their year to do it. With the vast majority of the district down in talent and less experienced, players like Stephen Tyree and Grant Jefferson can give the Crusaders hope. But that only hinges on hopes that Hastings and Elsik are not as good as they are expected to be in a rebuilding year.

Top Players in District 19-5A

The Katy Tiger dominance is expected to continue and it is because of some of their key skill players who are dedicated to a team effort. Sure, the individual accolades are nice, but you will not find many Tigers that will focus on the individual game. Teamwork is what has given this team the success it has. Players such as Will Thompson, Andy Dalton, Cody Lopasky and Will Kirchner are great athletes and will be recognized as individuals but the first goal is a district championship followed by a state championship is what matters most.
