The Austin 5A district has been the sole property of the Austin Westlake Chaparrals nearly every season except 2003. There is no reason to say the Chaps will be giving up or surrendering the district anytime soon including in 2005. One thing the rest of the district may have going for them is looking forward to filling up the remaining two playoff spots and the additional playoff spot in 2006.
Westlake in 2005 may have the opportunity to build on its playoff stuggle from last season. The Chaps will have a tough road ahead of them with a very competitive Region II staring directly at them. Look for Matt Dornak, Kyle Adams and William Ball to find ample opportunities to improve on their game in preparation for the playoffs.
Waiting in the wings as the Westlake QB will be Nick Foles. The junior quarteback wil have plenty of protection and weaponry to help improve his chances at the recruiting game. Afterall, it is the very same school that produced San Diego Chargers QB Drew Brees. With a very sizable line, there is no reason for Foles and his backfield to be productive.
Projected Finish
Looking at the picture outside of Westlake, the key teams to keep an eye out for are Austin Bowie, Hays Consolidated, Austin Akins and Bastrop. Do not be surprised to see the battle for second and third in the district become a four team race. The odds on favorites of the four are Bastrop and Bowie. Bastrop's defense could be at an all time high if they produce with the expectations that they are capable. Austin Bowie will be strong along the trenches of both sides, which could help their chances at gaining a playoff spot
Top Players in District 16-5A
Yes, Westlake has more talent than any of the teams in the district and they have the best opportunity make noise in the playoff picture. But when it come down to the difference between missing and making the playoffs, the rest of the district has a great opportunity to showcase their talents. If Akins wants to be back in the playoff picture, look no further than QB Joseph Skiff. Skiff and WR Steven Ortiz will have plenty of competition too. Just to name a few of those competitive players, you can look for Austin's Jeremy Smith, Hays' Nash McPheeteb and Bowie's Travis Johlke.
